Strictly speaking, this mineral is a sedimentary quartz – that is, a CHALCEDONIC pebble formation, often found in nodule form. Since the Stone Age a raw material for weapons and tools – FIRE STONE is very hard with razor-sharp conchoidal fracture.
As a rule, FIRESTONES are banded in the colour – grey/white, black or more rarely reddish. These however are POLYCHROME , so MULTIPLE !
In the 17th century for sparking flintlock rifles – the so-called shotguns. Therefore also the engl. Name: FLINTSTONE.
