The first TYPLOCALITY site is DOBROVA - UNTERDRAUBURG , in the extreme south-east of Carinthia. -Today, the former discovery area is located just over the border in the Republic of Slovenia - at that time, however, this area was Austria.
First described by the Austrian scientist Prof. Tschermak in 1883.
The previously unknown TURMALIN group was a mineral sensation. Sensation and the crystals were presented in museums and exhibitions worldwide.

The name comes from the river DRAU, which flows from South Tyrol via Carinthia to Slovenia to the Danube. And the Drau is called DRAVE in Slovenia - hence the name DRAVIT, which applies to ALL magnesium TURMALINE, no matter where they are found in the world.
