Strictly speaking, this mineral is a sedimentary quartz - a CHALCEDONIAN pebble formation, often found in nodular form. A raw material for weapons and tools since the Stone Age, FIRESTONE is very hard with a razor-sharp, conchoidal fracture.
As a rule, FIRESTONES are gray/white banded, black or, more rarely, reddish. However, these are POLYCHROME, i.e. MULTIPLE!
In the 17th century for sparks in flintlock rifles - the so-called shotguns. Hence the English name: FLINTSTONE.
