Great, fascinating play of colors on a hand-cut and polished sphere
.
The mineral LABRADORITE - named after the place where it was first found - the LABRADOR peninsula - in Canada - shows a great play of colors on good specimens, the so-called "labradorization". similar to the "opalization" of OPALS, the colors shown are actually only effects of light refraction, i.e. interference colors. The light is refracted by submicroscopic segregation twin lamellae in the plagioclase FELDSPAT.
The first discoverer in 1770 was the Czech missionary Father Adolf.
LABRADORITE with several colors are also traded as SPECTROLITH. First-class LABRADORITE currently comes mainly from Finland, Canada and Madagascar.
