MEZICA in the Rep. SLOVENIA - before 1918 Austria , German name - Mieß .., is one of the most famous WULFENIT sites in the World.
Mining at the foot of the Carinthian PETZEN and the Mießtal in the KARAWANKEN was already mentioned by the Romans in the 1st century. In the important LEAD and ZINC deposits, 800 KILOMETERS of tunnels have been excavated in the last 300 years, from a height of 2,000 meters up to 600 meters. Due to the smelter dust, lead acid rain has repeatedly formed, earning the Mizica Valley the name "Valley of Death".
The mine was closed in 1987. Now there is only a show mine.
This extraordinary WULFENITSTUFE with orange-brown, flat tabular crystals, tangled grown on bleached Wetterstein limestone is a great example of this famous mining.
