The shiny metallic magnetite/hematite veins emerged as pure iron from volcanic deep-sea trenches around 1.6 billion years ago - the other components only formed later.
The individual layers are curved and folded due to tectonic influences.
Tiger iron consists of shiny metallic magnetite/hematite - brown-yellow jasper and chert as well as shiny golden tiger's eye. The white parts are pure, monocrystalline QUARTZ.
The raw material is found in Priesca - Northern Cape - Bandet Iron Mine - Transvaal - South Africa
Such attractive, large pieces are great exhibits and very hard to come by.
